Before beginning any kind of kink play you and your play partner should always agree on a safeword beforehand. However, in some scenes you may be unable to speak. If you think you may be in a position to need a nonverbal safe word, we have some suggestions for you to consider.
Safesigns
Safesigns are non-verbal signals that are used to communicate with partners during any situation that the activity needs stop, may be too intense or that a check-in is needed. Play spaces can be loud, so putting a safesign in place gives you more options for communicating with the people you play with. These can be great for lifestyle submissives as well. Hand squeezing is a great example and easy to learn. One squeeze could mean active consent is given; I am okay. Two squeezes a more direct check-in or adjustment is needed. One long unrelenting squeeze or three rapid ones a full stop is required.
Safeobjects

Safe objects are great for letting your partner know when your limit has been reached, or if something needs adjusting. Even if you aren’t into pet play, a pet store is a great option for a safe object. You want something small enough to be held comfortably and not dropped accidently but also that will make noise and brightly colored to attract immediate attention. Dog clickers and small neon cat balls with bells in them are great options. When choosing a color make sure it contrasts the restraints you use so that it will be very obvious; in case you miss the sound you will see it.
Dominants should constantly monitor their submissives to look for safe signals, particularly in scenes where verbal communication may be difficult. This is essential for responsible sub care and a pleasurable scene.
